In the year 1954 Junior Technical School was undertaken by the Govt. of Assam and was named as Technical School. Later in the year 1959 the Govt. of India undertook the same and christened it as Industrial Training Institute. The Institute had Shri. Gunavi Ram Sharma as its first principal.
Tea plantation and fabrication were the most popular industry during the entire regime of ITI, Tezpur and was widely demanded by the local market. Under the NCVT course the following trades were conducted at ITI, Tezpur (prior to PPP Scheme) viz. Sewing Technology/ Stenography/ Fitter/ Turner/ Machinist/ MMV/ Electrician/ Welder and under the SCVT Courses viz. ICTSM/ COPA/ Agriculture Machineries/ Secretarial Practice.
